Description of Duties

This is a senior-level division head position in the Monroe County Department of Transportation responsible for the supervision and direction of the Traffic Control Center, Traffic Studies Unit, Traffic Signal Lab, Traffic Signal Maintenance and Construction, and Highway Lighting.  Additionally, this position is responsible for planning and administering capital improvement projects.  The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation or other higher-level staff member. General supervision is exercised over a professional and technical staff of engineers, mechanics, operators and engineering aides. 

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements on or before the date of the written exam: 

Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma; plus EITHER

  1. Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in any Engineering or Mathematics field, plus seven (7) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent*** professional** work experience in transportation/traffic engineering or operations involving the review of highway design plans, specifications or estimates, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity* or project supervision; OR
  2. Graduation with a Master’s degree in any Engineering or Mathematics field, plus five (5) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent*** professional** work experience in transportation/traffic engineering or operations involving the review of highway design plans, specifications or estimates, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity* or project supervision; OR
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

*Supervisory capacity, for the purposes of these minimum qualifications, involves typical duties such

as assigning and reviewing work, evaluating performance, maintaining work standards, motivating and

developing subordinate employees, implementing procedural changes, increasing efficiency and

dealing with problems of absenteeism, morale and discipline.  The supervision aspects must be an

integral part of the job, not incidental or occasional.

**Professional experience for the purpose of these minimum qualifications, does not include clerical,

labor, maintenance or similar activities.
